One of Toronto's most preferred neighbourhoods, Summerhill is close to downtown, it stretches along Yonge street and is nestled between Avenue Road and Mt Pleasant Road. This community is rich with park life, excellent shopping and close to everything.
Named after the 'Summer Hill' house, that was built in 1842 by Canadian transportation baron Charles Thompson. The Summer Hill house was an entertainment mecca at the time. In 1866 it became a private residence. The original coach house, circa 1865 is still standing today behind 36 Summerhill Gardens and can be seen from the The Rosehill Reservoir Park; a popular destination for residents in this area.
Outside of the Summer Hill estate, the North Toronto railway station was the heart of the community. Built in 1880 and renovated in 1916 it was the main Toronto Railway station. In 1931, Union station opened and traffic was redirected. In 1954, Summer hill opened up a TTC subway station and in 2003 the old railway station was brought back to life as retail space. It is currently one of Canada’s largest liquor stores.
